Alison is senior lecturer for the PGCE Primary programme within the Primary Education Department and part of the School of Education. Alison is a member of the Primary Leadership and Management Team .Alison oversees all PGCE pathways which includes Apprentice Routes into teaching, the University’s expanding portfolio of School Direct courses, as well as working with our Partner SCITT based in Somerset. Alison’s role also extends to recruitment and the induction of new students and the support of NQTs and recently qualified teachers. She works extensively with our Partnership schools. Alison has a specialism in Art and Design and teaches this across programmes.
Alison has an extensive background in Primary Education in a number of diverse schools in Birmingham and Solihull extending for 15 years, where she was most fortunate to be able to teach all age groups from Nursery through to year 6, including responsibility for Art and Design.
Alison has extensive experience working in Higher Education since 1993 when she worked as a lecturer in Art Education in the West Midlands before returning to a large, urban primary school to further develop her expertise. After a few years she returned to Higher Education, taking up a university lecturing post in Birmingham in 2006, lecturing in Early Childhood Studies and PGCE Primary ITE. She later became PGCE Programme Manager, managing all aspects of the academic and professional elements of the course, including developing partnerships with local schools and engaging with wider professional matters through membership of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) and working alongside colleagues in other universities. Alison continues to engage with national agendas relating to teaching through her membership of the primary UCET committee.
