The 21-year-old 2014 European silver medallist surged through the field in the home straight to finish second in the third semi-final in a new personal best of 44.48 seconds.

Mick Donovan Head of the University's Institute of Sport and Exercise Science said: "To see Matthew qualify for the Olympic 400m final is wonderful. He has achieved so much at the University during the past two years whilst also preparing for the Games in Rio.

"We are all united in hoping that Matthew will exceed his personal best again today and win a medal."

Students and staff at the University will be gathering at the University and homes all over the region again tonight to watch the big race, which is scheduled for 2am on Monday morning UK time.
