Post-training information for student mentors

Information for Students who have completed the introductory Student mentor training

Training and registering

Congratulations on passing the University of Worcester Mentoring Scheme Introductory online training.
If you have not already done so you now need to register as a student mentor by completing the general application form found on the vacancies pages on the University website.

If there are also specific student mentor roles advertised that you would like to apply for then just complete the application for the role you are interested in instead. You do not need to complete both the general and specific applications.

Once you have passed the training & registered your details:

  • You will be added to a database of all students who have passed the introductory training. The details on this register will be used solely for the purposes of the mentor scheme and will not be used for any other purposes.
  • A certificate will be produced for you for your records.
  • You will be sent a student contract of employment. This sets out your rights and responsibilities for any work you may undertake. It should be noted that passing the training and registering for the scheme does not guarantee you employment. It will be up to you to apply for posts as and when they are advertised.

Applying for mentoring work

Whenever there is work available an email will be sent to all registered students. If you are interested in applying for the role you should follow the instructions contained in the email.

There will also be specific jobs advertised on the vacancies pages on the University website. You should keep an eye on the jobs advertised here. If you feel you satisfy the requirements of the job then apply on-line as directed by the job advert.

When completing the application there is a section available for you to make your own comments. Please make sure that you include details of all relevant experience you may have and address each of the criteria in the person specification, giving any relevant examples you may have.

All applications will be passed to the staff running the project. They will follow standard University recruitment process to select students in a fair and transparent way.

If you would like advice about completing any application form the careers advisory service would be glad to assist you. Visit the careers pages for more details.

Before starting work

Once you have been offered a student mentor role you will need to fill out a University new starter form. This is needed so that can to be set up on the payroll system and be paid for any work you do. This is a one off requirement and will not be needed for every University job you take on. The staff of the project employing you will supply you with the relevant form.

Some student mentor work will also require that you have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check before you can start. The staff of the project employing you will supply you with the relevant form & talk you through the application process. The check needs to be carried out on behalf of the University so if you have an existing CRB certificate it will only be valid if it has been issued by the University within the last year.

Payment for work

All claims for payment under this scheme must be made via the on-line time sheet system. The staff of the project employing you will set you up on the system and explain how to use it. You will be paid on a monthly basis.

All time claimed by the deadline date given on the system will be paid on the 28th day of that month. Any claims submitted after the publicised date will be paid on 28th of the following month.

You are strongly advised to maintain a log/ journal of all work you undertake as this could prove to be of great value to you when applying for jobs after your graduation.
