West Midlands STEM Ambassador Hub

STEM Learning is the largest provider of STEM education and careers support to schools, colleges and other groups working with young people across the UK. The West Midlands STEM Hub has been run by the University of Worcester for a number of years.

“Our vision is for a world-leading STEM education for all young people across the UK”

We aim to inspire the next generation to develop a love for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and to consider the varied careers available to them with STEM skills and qualifications. We do this by mobilising the talent and passion of our local STEM Ambassadors, who are all keen to promote an interest and curiosity in STEM, increase STEM knowledge and develop employability skills in young people.

Our volunteer STEM Ambassadors work at all levels in a wide range of STEM-related careers and represent the diversity of backgrounds within the West Midlands. They provide current information about their sectors, bringing real stories and experience to enrich learning about curriculum topics.

We work with schools, youth organisations, employers and a range of partner organisations in Local Authorities across:

  • Birmingham
  • the Black Country
  • Coventry and Warwickshire
  • Herefordshire and Worcestershire

All STEM Ambassadors have an enhanced DBS check to enable them to volunteer with young people.

Ambassadors

Through a range of activities, including presentations, mentoring and careers talks, STEM Ambassadors play an essential role in inspiring the next generation with the world of STEM subjects and careers. Their support isn't just limited to the classroom - STEM Ambassadors also volunteer in STEM Clubs, youth and community groups and at public events, individually or with their employers' programmes.

Why sign up as a STEM Ambassador?

There are many reasons why we think you should become a STEM Ambassador - here are just a few:

  1. Being a STEM Ambassador is lots of fun - you get to spend time doing something totally different to your day job
  2. You can directly take part in inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals and entrepreneurs
  3. It can improve your communication skills - by speaking to a different audience, or practising public speaking you'll be refining your skills as you volunteer
  4. By supporting local schools and/or the pipeline of young professionals entering your profession, you can give back to your local and/or professional community
  5. Volunteering as a STEM Ambassador directly contributes towards any CPD or volunteering hours you may need to become accredited with your professional membership body

"Being a STEM Ambassador is probably the most satisfying aspect of my career. Inspiring kids for the future is the pinnacle of what’s possible and it’s tremendous fun too!"

Derek Langley, Product Manager, Thales

Employers

We create links between employers and organisations who work with young people in order to help tackle the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills shortage.

By engaging young people in STEM subjects, you can help develop their creativity, problem-solving and employability skills as well as providing a wider understanding and awareness of STEM-related careers.

Why support STEM education?

STEM skills are in high demand. A large proportion of firms that need employees with STEM skills and knowledge currently have difficulties recruiting staff, and most expect the shortages to persist. However, most businesses recognise that they have a key role in enthusing young people about STEM.

One of the easiest ways to achieve this is to encourage your employees to join our nationwide network of 25,000 STEM Ambassador volunteers already raising awareness of STEM, raising aspirations and helping young people make informed decisions about their future career.

“I wanted to show students how exciting STEM is and hopefully convince them that studying maths and science will lead them to successful and rewarding careers in the future.”

Roma Agrawal, STEM Ambassador, Structural Engineer at WSP

By becoming STEM Ambassadors, your employees can:

  • positively impact young people’s learning and development

  • encourage the future generation into STEM career paths and challenge stereotypes

  • contribute ideas to teachers about topics and activities to include in the curriculum

  • improve the awareness of your company’s work and brand

  • develop their communication, planning and presentation skills

The STEM Ambassador programme is a great way to inspire young people. The programme provides training and support for your employees, links to local schools and colleges and (if you have over 25 employees involved) can enable you to view and track the impact your employees are having via our website.
