Welcome to the Careers Advisory Service. Our professionally qualified team aims to provide a friendly response to your queries and to give you up to date information to meet your needs.

The Careers Advisory Service works with students, graduates, other University departments, and employers, to help students plan and manage their careers and lifelong learning, from pre-entry to beyond graduation.

This is done in the following ways:

Students
  • One-to-one advice from qualified advisors at 'Drop In' sessions, booked appointments, telephone or e-mail
  • Information about a wide range of opportunities and help in exploring them
  • Computer software, including Adult Directions, Exodus and Funderfinder
  • Careers sessions within academic modules or during lunchtimes
  • Annual Graduate Opportunities Fair
  • Regular briefings to all years by tableslips
  • Careers events, activities and job vacancies and publicised
Graduates

All graduates are entitled to use the resources in the Careers Information room. Graduates who have completed their course of study within the last 3 years, from this or other universities are entitled to one-to-one advice and guidance through booked appointments or ‘Drop In’ sessions.

Pre-Entry Clients

Anyone aged 18 or over, who is considering taking a programme of study at Higher Education level is entitled to use the pre-entry service. Advice and guidance is offered through telephone, e-mail or face to face, either at the University or in the community as appropriate.

Other University Departments

The Careers Advisory Service endeavours to work with academic and other service departments to develop employability skills in students.

For example:

  • Working in conjunction with academic staff to deliver employability sessions within the curriculum
  • Providing statistics and reports about 1st and medium term destination data of past students
  • Use of Careers link tutors to disseminate information to students
  • Staff development activities
  • Production of relevant materials to support staffing their delivery of employability related curriculum
Employers

We facilitate links with local and national employers to develop employability skills in current students and to raise awareness of opportunities available to them upon graduation. We work with the Students' Union to enable the promotion of part-time vacancies.

Specifically we:

  • Offer a free service for advertising graduate job vacancies which are local and appropraite to the needs of our students
  • Discuss with you how University can meet your recruitment needs 
  • Offer the opportunity for employers to give presentations to students
  • Organise the annual Graduate Opportunities Fair

Information is available in alternative formats on request and facilities are available to wheelchair users and we liase closely with the staff of the Disability & Dyslexia Service to provide a comprehensive service for all.
