Although some funding bodies still retain paper-based application systems, an increasing number of funding bodies are making use of electronic submission systems to replace or sit alongside paper submission.
Paper-based submission usually requires you to have your application signed by appropriate University staff before it is posted to the funding body.
For electronic submissions, the process varies depending on the system used. The main funding bodies who use electronic submission are listed below, along with links to their systems and some information about the way in which the University processes such applications.
Please note that obtaining signatures on paper applications and the processing of electronic applications can take some time, and you should be sure to allow time in your plan for these activities. We would recommend allowing at least one week for processing between the date that you complete your portion of the application and the date that you hope to send it to the funder (either by post or electronically).
Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S)
This system is used to submit applications for funding to all the UK Research Councils, as well as the Technology Strategy Board. Support for Je-S users can be found through the system help link. You will need a registered account if you wish to be named as an Investigator on a grant application. When you submit an application through Je-S it comes to the Graduate Research School for approval and final submission. The GRS can offer advice and assistance on using this system.
For all British Academy schemes you must submit through the e-Gap system. You must register for an account. As with Je-S all bids submitted through e-Gap come to the GRS for approval and final submission.
Central Commissioning Facility Research Management System
The Central Commissioning Facility (CCF) manages and administers research programmes funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Policy Research Programme (PRP). All bids to the NIHR and PRP must be submitted through this Research Management System (RMS).
For all Leverhulme Trust schemes you must submit through their online system. You must register for an account. As with Je-S all bids submitted through their system come to the GRS for approval and final submission.
For all Royal Society schemes you must submit through the e-Gap system. You must register for an account. As with Je-S all bids submitted through e-Gap come to the GRS for approval and final submission.
The eGrants system enables applicants to apply for grants online. The system provides workflow to guide the applications through the necessary steps towards final submission to the Wellcome Trust. Most applicants for Biomedical Science and Medical Humanities grants are required to submit their applications via our eGrants system. However, Word forms are still available for: preliminary applications for the majority of the Trust’s funding schemes; Public Engagement grants; Technology Transfer grants. As with Je-S all bids submitted through e-Grants come to the GRS for approval and final submission.
