EU Funding Bodies

EU Funding Bodies

In Europe, the European Commission is a major funder of research and knowledge transfer. Particularly significant is the funding available through its HORIZON 2020 programme which brings all research-related EU initiatives together.

Calls for the HORIZON 2020 programme will be posted online on the Participant Portal. Calls for the remaining funding from previous framework programmes will also be posted online until these funding streams are closed.

Links to specific EU funding pages can be found below:

Also note, the ERASMUS programme has been expanded and is now called ERASMUS+. Calls for ERASMUS+ will also be published online.

Other EU funding bodies

There are a number of other bodies within Europe which support research either through direct funding of research or through funding for conferences, workshops and networks that bring researchers together:

  • Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) is a partnership between 21 Humanities Research Councils across Europe and the European Science Foundation which aims to establish the humanities in the European Research Area and in the European Commission Framework Programmes. A new €18.5 million HERA Joint Research Programme “Cultural Encounters” Call for Proposals was made early in 2012.
  • European Science Foundation is an independent, non-governmental organisation dedicated to pan-European scientific networking and collaboration. It covers all areas including humanities and social sciences. It is not a funding organisation but its members provide funding for various activities such as conferences, networks, exploratory workshops.
