Staff Development & Training

Staff Development & Training

The cornerstone of the staff development policy is for effective review and development (appraisal) meetings to be held between employees and their line managers - at least once a year - to review the previous period, set targets for the forthcoming period and identify any training/development needs. Training is available for both managers and for employees in preparing for and carrying out the meetings.  Needs which are specific to individuals or small groups should be discussed with the Personnel and Training Officer.

Training needs are met in several ways; there is a university-wide programme of events arranged by the Personnel Department and by the Learning and Teaching Centre. Other departments within the University also provide developments events throughout the year. In addition, we have access to numerous external programmes arranged through national networks operating in higher education; these include the Association of University Administrators, the Midlands Staff Development Partnership, the Higher Education Academy and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.

Staff who contribute to teaching can find information about teacher accreditation programmes (SEDA) and peer observation of teaching scheme on the Learning & Teaching Centre's website. Visit the Personnel Department's Staff Development and Training pages.
