Teaching and Learning FdA
This course provides an in-service career pathway for teaching assistants and other support staff working in an education context. It is a school-centred programme based at institutions in Somerset, Cornwall and Devon.
The programme is a two-year full-time or three/four-year part-time course leading to a Foundation degree.
This course provides you with the skills, knowledge and insight to enable you to make a valued contribution to the educational, social and emotional well-being of children in a range of supportive contexts. We welcome applications from experienced mature students, please see the Mature Students section for details.
There are two possible pathways:
An FdA for those wishing to prepare for primary teaching, early years professional status or teaching support roles in primary and nursery settings
An FdA for those wishing to prepare for teaching support roles or secondary teaching in a range of vocational and applied subjects – contact the providers for details

Based in the South West of England. This course is not taught at the Worcester campus. It is run by the Learning Institute and Somerset LEA.

Methods of assessment on the course include: Essays, seminars, practical workshops, professional journals, projects and reports

Employability
This course represents a substantial step toward acquiring a full Honours degree through a one-year full-time or two-year part-time Top-up course. Successful completion allows possible progression on to the BA (Hons) Top-up degree in Professional Practice taught in the South West with equivalent top-up degree delivered at Worcester. This may subsequently provide a route into teaching through a PGCE or GTP programme.
Skills gained:
Improved understanding of learning and teaching in either a primary or secondary setting
Learn how to work more effectively with teachers, pupils and parents
Prepare for Higher Level Teaching Assistant submission
Become a more reflective and independent learner
Ability to support key aspects of the curriculum
Help to better meet the individual learning needs of pupils and manage behaviour
