Prior language skills

Japanese Stage 1

This module is suitable for complete beginners and assumes that you have never studied Japanese before.

Japanese Stage 2

This module is suitable for students who have successfully completed Stage 1, or who have done some Japanese in the past. However, it is not suitable for students who have A-level Japanese or equivalent.

Overview

Japanese Stage 1

You will develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in Japanese, with the focus on oral communication. The development of communicative language skills is set in the context of situations and tasks facing a visitor to the country. The module also gives an interesting insight into Japanese culture.

Japanese Stage 2

You will build on and refresh language skills that you have developed in Stage 1 or through other contact with the language. All four language skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening - are addressed, with the emphasis on engaging in social and workplace interactions and making practical arrangements in everyday situations. The module also highlights cultural aspects.

Both modules are taught in a lively, communicative way and you will be expected to participate in pair and group work activities. You will also work independently outside the taught sessions and extend your language learning skills through the development of a portfolio of coursework.

Both Japanese Stage 1 and Japanese Stage 2 are taught by Kinue Snookes.
