Art & Design BA (Hons)

Art and Design BA (Hons)

Art & Design at Worcester recognises and enables you to develop connections between a range of practices in art and design fields.

The course will introduce you to an array of tools, both traditional and digital, and develops your use of them alongside the evaluative and critical skills that are appropriate to your study as it develops. Modules are designed to enable you to exploit your creative potential and grow your visual communication skills, working with a broad range of media.

The first year is ‘diagnostic’ in that it aims to provide you with an opportunity to sample working with a variety of media and practices and to review your previous experience. It introduces you to different areas of visual communication through teaching and learning that encourages experimentation, self-directed study and project work. By the end of the first year, you will have had an opportunity to explore where your particular interests lie and, in the second year, you will be able to build on these and to develop your individual practice and visual language through increasing emphasis upon experimentation, innovation and project-based learning. The third year focuses on encouraging you to consolidate your practice through independent study and through development of professional competencies that will enhance your employability, with learning taking place through Professional Practice, Placement and Final Show modules, amongst others.

The course is supported by a programme of research trips in which you are encouraged to participate. In recent years, there have been trips to Rome, Florence and New York and new destinations are planned this year.

Supporting the teaching is a programme of regional, national and international research trips that you are encouraged to participate in and that support your creative learning and development. In recent years there have been annual four-day research trips to Rome, Florence and New York; these will be extended this year to Berlin and other cultural capitals.

      Assessment

You will learn about the subject through lectures, learning groups, workshops, seminars and tutorials, taught in dedicated studio spaces for fine art, textiles, ceramics, graphic design and multi-media.

The emphasis throughout the course is on you developing your creative practice through engagement with a range of art and design disciplines. This will enable you to acquire skills and subject knowledge appropriate to your areas of vocational interest.

Tutors on the Art & Design course are professional artists, who practice as graphic, information or web designers or as fine artists, painters, sculptors, printmakers, digital image makers, photographers, textile artists, ceramicists, public artists and multimedia artists.

You will be encouraged to work on ‘live’ projects suitable to your area of Art & Design practice and are supported in this through seminar sessions with visiting professional artists and designers who have links with business and the creative industries.

Assessment is student-centred and the emphasis is on you becoming an independent learner throughout the programme. You keep a learning journal in each module, enabling you to reflect on your learning while you measure your individual achievement. You will be supported by Learning Teams and each major project is assessed by means of self-assessment, peer assessment and negotiated tutor assessment.

Student, Art & Design BA (Hons)

“Art has always been a hobby of mine, and Art and Design covers a range of theory and gives me lots of different job options. I’ve got several things to explore before choosing a career- illustration, visual arts, teaching, advertising, animation, film-making. Hopefully my work placement in the third year will help me think about the future and build up some connections. After all, it’s better to have too many options than too few- that’s why I chose this course!”
