Off Air Recording

Off Air Recording

The University has a licence from the Educational Recording Agency which permits the institution to record televison programmes for educational purposes. This licence covers BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and freeview channels. We are also able to record from a number of satellite channels.

Recording
To request a recording, please use the online request form on the customer portal. We require 24 hours notice for all requests. We record all broadcasts with subtitles unless specifically requested not to.

No responsibility is taken for programmes that do not record due to:-

  • A change in programming or broadcasting by originating broadcaster
  • Power failure or technical problems
  • Late requests

Missed Recordings
The University is a member of the BUFVC which enables us to request a limited number of missed programmes broadcast since 1998.

Searching Archived Recordings
The Off Air Archive has over 5,000 entries covering a wide range of subject areas. It can be accessed via Resources Online by using the advanced search option.

Open University
Open University programmes can also be recorded. However your department will have to pay an initial fee for the recording, and an annual fee for the programme to remain within our Archive.

If you request an OU recording you will be asked to review the relevant recordings each year to decide if it is needed for future use. If you no longer require the recording, or the subscription is not paid, User Services will delete it.

Copies of recordings
We also provide a service to produce copies of material (copyright permitting), either from DVD, video or DV tape. The transfer of the material can be made to DVD or video tape.

Please direct any queries to Susan Milbourne (s.milbourne@worc.ac.uk). Please do not use this email for recording requests.

Off Air Copyright Information

Section 35(1) of the 1988 Copyright, Design and Patents Act, which came into force on 1st August 1989, gave educational establishments the right to record off-air for educational purposes any radio and television broadcasts and cable programmes without infringing copyright. However, Section 35(2) of this Act states that this right does not apply if a certified licensing scheme is in place.
Copying from commercial recordings is not permitted by either licence or the provisions of the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act (1988).
