How many items may I request per year?
- Undergraduates (1st and 2nd years): 5 requests
- Undergraduates (final year - dissertation): 25 requests
- Masters level students: 25 requests
- Staff & research students: up to 50 requests
How do I make a request?
Check the Library Catalogue and the A-Z Journals list to make sure that the item is not held here or available online.
Request forms are available from the Enquiry Point:
Yellow – for photocopied articles from journals or complete journal issues
Green – for books (& photocopied chapters) or conference proceedings
(Requests for PhD theses must now go direct to ethos.bl.uk - ie staff and students will need to register their details and order a downloadable copy of a thesis directly from Ethos.)
Provide as much information as possible on the journal or book request forms. If you request a photocopy, please read and sign the copyright declaration on the back of the form.
How much will it cost me?
Photocopied articles/chapters cost £1.50 per request. There is no initial charge for the loan of books, unless you order more than your year’s allocation, but there is a charge of £1.50 for any renewal request. You may be charged if you do not collect an item.
Staff and PhD research students do not pay for this service.
How long does it take?
Plan ahead with requests. At busy times of the year, it can take up to 4 weeks. If you have a last date by which you require an item, then please specify this on the request form.
What happens when an item arrives?
Photocopied articles are sent direct to the address you put on the request form. If you have requested a book, you will be notified when it arrives. These items cannot be borrowed via the self-issue machines. Bring your ID card to the Information Point during full service hours* and the book will be issued to you. Some items are not allowed to leave the premises at the request of the lending library.
What happens if there is a query with my request?
If there is a delay or query, we will contact you. Details of current and past requests can be viewed in the “My Account” function of the Library Catalogue.
Can I renew my Inter Library Loan?
Inter Library Loans are usually borrowed for 6 weeks (unless recalled). If students do need a book for longer, there will be a charge of £1.50 for each renewal. See bookmark enclosed with book for details. A refund will be given if, for any reason, we cannot renew the item.
What happens if my Inter Library Loan is overdue?
Overdue books are charged at the rate of 25p per day.
What happens if my Inter Library Loan is recalled?
Recalled books cannot be renewed and must be returned as soon as you are notified about the recall.
Can I have books posted to me?
It may be possible to post books, if you are unable to visit the library. Contact the Inter Library Request staff to make arrangements. There will be a charge of £5 per book for outward postage, and you will be responsible for the safe return of the book, by recorded delivery. A better alternative may be to request the book via inter library loan from your local public library, or to check whether a copy is available at the nearest academic library to where you live (see Guide to Using Other Libraries).
