If you are looking to cover the costs of attending or organising a conference some of the major charities have in place schemes which provide direct support for this:

British Academy Conference Support - £1000-£20000; aimed at those organising conferences to assist in bringing key speakers to the UK; to provide organisational support; to assist with publication of proceedings.

British Academy Overseas Conference Grants - up to £900 to cover travel expenses of academics giving papers at overseas conferences.

Royal Society Conference Grants - covers costs of UK academic presenting paper/poster or chairing a session at an overseas conference; several calls each year.

A lot of smaller funders - e.g. learned societies and associations - offer some kind of funding for research expenses, and particularly travel and conference attendance.  It is a good idea to search on ResearchResearch for these kind of subject specific funding opportunities.
