Research Centres

The development of specific centres of excellence in research and knowledgre transfer is an important part of the University's enhacement of its research capability.

The University considers that it is important that such centres have appropriate recognition and are approved by the Academic Board. Research Centres Handbook.

There are currently four research centres, each of which contribute significantly both to the support of research students and to the University's research culture.  These are:

Association for Dementia Studies

Centre for People at Work

Centre for Rural Research

National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit

All academic staff are encouraged to consider setting up new research centres.  Being a designated research centre brings with it a range of benefits:

  • the use by the centre of the term 'recognised research centre’ or ‘recognised specialist centre' of the University;
  • the recognition by the University of the substantive status of the centre and a focus for its activities
  • access to customised marketing and publicity advice for the centre;
  • the right to use customised stationery and other forms of identity, as approved by the Marketing Department;
  • a focus for the attraction of external funding and for promoting the reputation of research and consultancy;
  • the provision of accommodation and infrastructure support by the University;
  • the authority to manage the financial and human resources of the Centre

Each Research Centre is subject to review on a 5 yearly basis as set out in the Quality Assurance Handbook Section 9.
