Training and Development for Staff
This is the preliminary programme for 2009-10 (please note lunch is normally provided for sessions beginning at 12:45):
Tuesday Oct 13, 9:15-2:30 (PL 1007) - Research Supervisor Training
This workshop is normally compulsory for all staff wishing to engage in supervision of research students. The sessions look at the research degree regulations as well as offering advice and suggestions on good practice in supervision and suggesting some possible approaches to supervision. Further details can be found here.
Tuesday Oct 20, 12:45-2:15 (CC007) - Finding Research Funding
This workshop provides an overview of research funding bodies with a primary focus on the UK but with some consideration of EU and other international funding bodies. It will be useful for all staff who are looking to find funding for their research and for those who wish to keep up-to-date with the current research funding landscape.
Thursday Oct 29, 12:45-2:15 (CC008) - Costing a Research Project
This session follows on from the session on finding research funding and deals with the key issue of identifying and costing the resources needed for a research project. It will deal with the issue of Full Economic Costing (FEC) and will look at what costs different bodies/organisations are willing to fund. This session will be useful for those in the process of putting together a funding bid or for those who wish to get sense of what putting a bid together may involve.
Wednesday Nov 11, 12:45-1:45 (PLG011) - Planning and preparing for the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2013)
HEFCE has run a periodic research assessment exercise since 1986 which has determined the level of research funding to be allocated to Universities for the following period. Worcester fared reasonably well in RAE 2008 receiving a 220% increase in funding following the results but wishes to improve its results further. This session will provide an overview of the next HEFCE research assessment to be known as the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2013). It will also provide guidance on how individual staff might plan for the assessment to ensure that they maximise their potential.
Thursday Nov 19, 12:45-2:15 (EEG027) - Putting Together a Research Funding Bid
This is the third of three sessions focused on research funding and will set out good practice in writing a research funding application, drawing on guidance provided by for example the Research Councils and on the experience of staff who have succeeded and/or failed in making a bid. This session will be useful for all staff considering making an application for research funding.
Tuesday Nov 24, 9:30-1:00 (CC007) - Research Examiner Training
This session is aimed at staff who are interested in becoming research degree examiners and at research supervisors wishing to get a fuller sense of the examination process. The session will look at the key regulations but will also look at good practice in examining the thesis and at the viva voce.
Thursday Dec 3, 12:45-2:15 (EEG027) - Developing Your Publication Profile
This session provides guidance on both planning for publication and writing for publication. It looks at identifying where you might publish – for example, which journals to target – and how you can improve the chances of your work being accepted for publication.
Thursday Dec 12, 12:45-1:45 (CC008) - How to use Je-S (Joint Electronic Submission) (cancelled)
This is a training session on how to register for and use the electronic submission systems used by the principle research funders. Primary focus will be on using Je-S, the research councils UK system, but there will also be consideration of, for example, the British Academy and Royal Society system, e-grants.

Further details can be found here.
Tuesday Jan 26, 12:15-1:15 (EEG050) - Using Research Professional
This session provides a guide to using Research Professional the online funding database. The session will demonstrate how to use the funding search option effectively and how to save and re-use searches.
Wednesday Jan 27, 12:00-4:00 (tbc) - Research Conduct and Ethics
This workshop considers how a researcher should conduct him/herself and specifically focuses on the ethical issues that might arise in the course of a research project that involves human subjects/participants. It also considers through the use of case studies how you might rethink your research design to ensure that you address these issues. It will be useful for all staff engaging in research with human subjects and for those supervising research with human subjects.
