Research Governance and Ethics

Research Governance is a wide ranging term summarising how the University manages the research process from the initial project inception, through to the execution of the research project, and ultimately to the dissemination and exploitation of the research results.

Many research funders and research partners are now looking to Universities to ensure suitably high standards of research governance, and to comply with the funder’s own codes of practice.  The Department of Health’s Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care, for example, lays down strict standards for research and defines mechanisms for assessing that standards are achieved.  Much of this is merely a matter of codifying what is accepted good practice in particular research fields, and is routinely practiced by staff in the course of their research.

The University is in the process of enhancing its research governance procedures to ensure the University's research practices comply with statutory and funder requirements.

The University has put in place Guidelines and Procedures for Good Research Practice and has reviewed and updated its procedures for ethical review of research projects.
