Blogs

A blog - short for "web log", is a type of website based on a diary format. They are usually (but not always) maintained by an individual, and provide regular entries and updates, commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. Blogs can be used as online diaries, providing news updates, personal reflections and progress reports. They are also used as a medium to comment on specific areas or interests. Blogs are used at the University for many different purposes, including the following:
  • For tutors to keep students informed of events and announcements for their subject area
  • So that students can keep a log of reflections on their learning experience or placement
  • News bulletins from university services
  • To provide updates from the organiser/co-organiser of a working group or committee
  • For student project groups to report on project progress

There are many ways in which to set up a blog. One basic and simple to use system is Blogger from Google. This allows users to set up multiple blogs, hosted for free - ideal for student use. It also allows group blogging and the ability to post from mobile devices as well as integration with other Google services such as the iGoogle homepage.

WordPress offers a more sophisticated service, with a focus on aesthetics, web standards and usability. It also provides powerful user management to administrate user registration and restrict what can be posted by groups of authors. Each blog has its own user account, and has proved ideal for members of staff provide an information or update service.
