MR JULIAN PALLETT, MA (Oxon) (Chair)
Partner and Head of Finance, Projects & Technology Group - Wragge & Co LLP (Birmingham, London and Brussels). Chairman Birmingham Committee Ironbridge Gorge Museum Development Trust. Interests include History, Politics, Architecture and Music. Governor since 2001. Chair of the Board from August 2007, also chairs the Finance & Development Committee
MISS HELEN ANGLIN
Helen is Vice President - Education of the Students' Union and one of two student representatives on the Board of Governors. She serves on the Audit Committee.
DR HEATHER BARRETT BA (Hons) PhD
BA (Hons) Portsmouth Polytechnic; PhD Birmingham University. Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Appointed as Lecturer in Geography at UCW in 1992, currently a Senior Lecturer. Teaching and research interests in urban geography and heritage studies. Committee member of Worcester Civic Society. Appointed as staff governor representing academic staff in 2005 and currently serving on the Audit Committee.
MR JOHN BATEMAN OBE
Director of Youth Work UK and Chief Executive of UK Youth. Trustee of Worcestershire Council for Voluntary Youth Services, member of the Management Board of "Youth Active" and member of Ministrerial Advisory Group for Aiming High. Awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to young people. Appointed an independent Governor of the University in 2008 and currently serving on the Personnel Committee.
MS MAGGIE BLYTH
Maggie serves as Independent Chair of the Herefordshire and Kent Safeguarding Children Boards. She is a member of the National Parole Board for England and Wakes and the UK Health Professions Council. Maggie's early career involved her organising education programmes and offender employment programmes for London Probation Service and Thames Valley Probation Area. In 2001 she joined the National Youth Justice Board for England and Wales as a senior civil servant before a ministerial appointment to the Parole Board for England and Wales in 2005. She is also a Director of a social care and criminal justice consultancy and has edited a number of volumes on safeguarding, early intervention and children at risk. Maggie was appointed an independent Governor in August 2011 and is currently serving on the Personnel Committee.
PROFESSOR MICHAEL CLARKE CBE MA DL
Professor Clarke has served as Vice Principal of the University of Birmingham since 2003. Prior to him joining the University of Birmingham in 1993 he served in local government in Scotland. Professor Clarke represents the regional higher education institutions on the West Midlands Regional Assembly and serves as a Non-Executive Director of the Birmingham Research Park and the Malvern Hills Science Park. He chairs the Board of the Central Technology Beltn, the Worcestershire Strategic Partnership and VisitWorcester. He is also member of a number of regional bodies and is Co-Chair of the Public Policy Management Association. He is a member of the General synod of the Church of England and a Lay Canon and member of the Chapter of Worcester Cathedral. Professor Clarke was appointed a Governor of the University in 2007 and currently serves on the Finance & Development Committee.
MRS ODETTE FIELDING
Odette commenced part time work at the University in 2002 having emigrated from South Africa in 2001. She is now currently employed full time at the University as the Financial and Adminstrative Officer for the Sports Centre within the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science. She is a member of the University's Joint Consultative Committee and the Diversity and Equality Committee. Odette also serves as the Executive Unison Member for the Higher Education Services Group. Odette was elected by University support staff as their representative on the Board of Governors joining in August 2010, she also acts as a staff governor observer on the Personnel Committee.
MRS ANNA HOOPER
After a career in children's book publishing and marketing Anna changed careers and until 2007 she worked for the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in Adult Education. During this time she developed the GCSE English provision and improved learners success rates. Anna moved to Worcester in 2008 and has become involved in the Worcester Festival Choral Society and the Worcester Volunteer Centre. Anna joined the Board of Governors in August 2011 as an independent governor and is a member of the Finance & Development Committee.
MR SAM LEWIS
President of the Students' Union and one of two student representatives on the Board of Governors. Sam is a member of the Finance & Development Committee.
PROFESSOR JIM LOW
Professor Low is Head of the Birmingham School of Architecture at Birmingham City University. Prior to this he was Dean of Faculty of the Built Environment at Birmingham City University and an HM Inspector fo FHE Construction Eastern Division. He is a member of the Examination Board of the Architects Registration Board and a RIBA Visiting Board Member. Professor Low was appointed as a co-opted member to the Board of Governors in August 2005. Professor Low also serves as a member of the Board's Finance & Development Committee.
MR MIKE NEWITT
Mike has enjoyed a long and successful career with leading UK food and drinks companies. He has been Marketing Director of Cadbury Schweppes, Bulmers and Milk Link and Managing Director of Loseley Dairy Products and Bridge Farm Dairies. Mike is currently Chairman of Heart of England Fine Foods and a Business Mentor of the Prince's Trust. Independent Governor since 2006, Mike is Chair of the Audit Committee and appointed one of the two Vice Chairs of the Board in 2011.
MR ZAD PADDA
Zad is currntly Vice Chair of the West Mercia Police Authority, a Board Director of BoxOn (UK) Ltd and Vicarage Nurseries Ltd and Executive Director of SYCC Ltd. He was one of the key proponents of a project which successfully lobbied for the licencing and registration of labour providers, the legislation was part of his Nuffield Farming Scholarship (2004). Zad has also been awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship (2008) to travel overseas to understand the Global BMW Third Sector. He is currently working with funders and central government agencies to develop the theme of the Big Society and how it can be used to benefit communities locally. Zad is currently studying an Executive MBA at the University of Birmingham. He was appointed an independent governor in August 2011 and serves on the Finance and Development Committee.
MR TIM PATRICKSON
Tim read Geography and Sociology at the University of Keele, decided on a career in the motor industry, and joined British Leyland at Longbridge in 1970. He moved to Jaguar Cars in 1982, where he was responsible for developing the Jaguar franchise away from the former BL parent during privitisation in the mid 1980's. During 24 years at Jaguar Cars, he managed a variety of Jaguar's Marketing and Sales functions, both in the UK and across continential Europe. Taking advantage of Jaguar's downsizing Tim took early retirement in 2006. Currently he is Administrator for two grant-making trusts originating from a Black Country family fortune - The Douglas Turner Trust and the RD Turner Charitable Trust, which also owns the Arley Estate and Arboretum in the Severn Valley. He is also Chairman of another grant-making Trust, the Singer Foundation, and a Trustee of Inkberrow Millennium Green trust. Tim joined the Board of Governors as an Independent Governor in 2006 and serves on the Audit Committee.
MR LEE PROBERT
Vice Principal of Hull College. Formerly Director of Equality and Diversity at the Learning & Skills Council. Lee is an alumni of the University and a keen musician leading to him being appointed as Production Manager and Musicial Director of the University's Students' Union's Musical Theatre whilst a student. Appointed as an independent member of the Board in 2007. Lee is a member of the Personnel Committee.
MRS JAN QUALLINGTON
Commenced employment at University of Worcester in 1995 following the amalgamation of Schools of Nursing into Higher Education Institutions. Original profession general nursing specialising in cardiothoracic and intensive care. Current role Associate Director of Quality and Student Experience. First degree in Education, MA in Bioethics, currently engaged in Doctoral study re Ethics of Public Involvement in Health with Keele University. member of the International Association of Bioethics. Personal interests - people, travel, gardening and reading. Appointed as Staff Governor in August 2005, serving on the Finance & Development sub-committee.
MRS JULIE SWAN
Head of Regulatory Policy with Ofqual, Julie has also worked for The Law Society and The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education. External Member of the College of Law's Academic Board and City & Guilds' Quality and Standards Committee. Julie was appointed as an Independent Governor in 2008 and serves as a member of the Audit Committee.
PROFESSOR TAMAR THOMPSON
Tamar began her career as a Nurse, becoming a Ward Sister in 1974. In 1996 she was appointed Director of Quality and Service Improvement at the Worcester Royal Infirmary NHS Trust. This has been followed by roles as Director of Corporate Affairs at the NHS Executive, West Midlands Regional Office, Director of External & Corporate Affairs for the West Midlands South Strategic Health Authority, Interim Chief Executive for Hereford & Worcester Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Currently an Independent Healthcare Consultant she is also a Director of Strategic Partnerships for the NHS Institute for Innovation and Inmprovement. She joined the Board of Governors in August 2005 as an independent governor and a member of the Finance & Development Committee and Personnel Committee and one of the two Vice Chairs.
MR PAUL WEST
Chief Constable of West Mercia Constabulary since August 2003. Joined Durham Constabulary in 1979 after completing a physics degree at Oxford University. Awarded a Harkness Fellowship in 1986 and studied for an MSc in Criminal Justice at Michigan State University, USA graduating with 'High Honor'. Appointed Assistant Chief Constable for Thames Valley Police in 1998 and graduated from Durham University, with an MA in Human Resource Management and Development. Promoted to Deputy Chief Constable in 2000, with responsibility for Professional Standards and Force Performance. Currently the Chair of the ACPO Professional Standards Committee, co-ordinating the Police Service's national response to all complaints, discipline, staff vetting and anti-corruption issues. His personal interests include sport, especially football, classical music, home, garden and keeping farm animals. Mr West joined the Board of Governors in August 2007 as an independent governor, he is Chair of the Personnel Committee and also serves on the Finance & Development Committee.
