University Honours those who Mentor Health Students

Back to news listings

Health and social care professionals who mentor students from the University of Worcester have been celebrated at a special awards ceremony.

The University’s annual Mentor Awards recognise outstanding contributions to the student practice learning experience by professionals in the workplace.

In what is the seventh year of the awards, prizes were presented in categories such as Outstanding Mentor, Outstanding Ambulance Station and Outstanding Practice Learning Environment.

Jo Rouse, Head of the University’s Academic Unit for Applied Professional Studies and Chair of the Mentor Awards Steering Group, said: “Having highly committed and effective mentors within the practice learning environment is central to effective student learning experiences.

“Despite the huge pressures and changes many staff in the health, social care and community sector are under, the professionals who mentor our students continue to provide outstanding support, role modelling and practice education for the health, social care and community practitioners of the future. We are very grateful for their dedication and time.

“The mentor awards are an important celebration in our annual calendar and provide an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution that mentors make in our programmes. The Mentor Awards Steering Group received a very high number of outstanding nominations which reflects the quality of mentoring, and made the process of selecting winners a huge challenge as all of the mentors nominated were excellent.”

The opening address at the ceremony, which was held at the Graeme Hick Pavilion at Worcestershire County Cricket Club, was given by Jan Sobieraj, Managing Director of the NHS Leadership Academy. The NHS Leadership Academy is a strategic intervention for the NHS, designed to make sure the health system develops the leadership it needs to meet the challenges it will face in the coming years.
