World champion silver medallist runner, Hannah England, shared her experiences of juggling sport and study with a group of high performance and elite athletes at the University of Worcester.

The 15 athletes are all on the University’s Sports Scholarship scheme, designed to help them pursue their sports careers alongside gaining a degree.

Among them is world class athletics star, Matthew Hudson-Smith, Great Britain Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Captain, Sophie Carrigill, and equestrian star, Ellie Turner.

Middle distance runner Hannah England, who took Silver in the 2011 World Championships at 1500m, said: “It’s a very difficult period coming to university and combining it with sport at an elite level. I wanted to share my experiences and raise awareness of time management and how to make the most of opportunities available.”

The University’s Sports Scholarships are available for a range of team and individual sports. Financial bursaries range from £100 to £2,000 and support packages include as a minimum, strength and conditioning programmes, sports therapy support, gym membership, athlete lifestyle advisor and a University of Worcester sports clothing bundle.

Charlotte Beaman-Evans, Elite Athlete Mentor at the University, said: “Support like this can often be invaluable to athletes who are juggling sporting endeavours with studying, and our bespoke strategies help our athletes to maximise their potential, offering support and advice on pastoral issues, including academic management, as well as sport specific support in areas such as strength and conditioning, injury prevention and awareness, massage, nutrition and psychology. Depending on the scholarship level, successful scholars will also engage in an athlete education programme which considers anti-doping awareness, key transition periods and career development.

“We invite applications from all athletes competing at a high performance or elite level and are full or part time students at the University of Worcester. New students are eligible to apply during the application phase. Potential athletes can find more information on the specific sport criteria’s and the sports we support in our scholarship information pack. The scholarship information pack can be found on our sports scholarship webpage or by emailing Hannah Crowther on h.crowther@worc.ac.uk .”
