Social Welfare student Daniel Belgrave was named in the British Basketball League’s (BBL) Team of the Week after an excellent performance with the Worcester Wolves last weekend.
Despite not being a professional player, the University of Worcester student, made the BBL’s selection of five star players of the week.
The 25-year-old, from Ladywood, Birmingham, said: “I feel very overwhelmed. I have received a very positive reception these last few days from a lot of people and feel blessed to be in this situation.
“I was just happy with being able to play so this achievement is beyond what I expected to happen. I’m proud of myself and the work I have put in this summer with my close friends and team mates. I am also thankful to coach Paul James and my team mates who encourage me and put me in this situation.”
Daniel, who started playing basketball when he was 15, played for the Wolves second team last year, where he achieved the player of the year award. But this season has played for the main professional team.
Wolves Head Coach Paul James said: “Daniel’s achievement is testament and clear evidence that the University of Worcester study and play basketball programme is working and now starting to bare fruit. Daniel was a key member of the BUCS championship winning team last season and now is showing that he can perform at the highest level in the country playing in the British Basketball League. Significantly, he is also performing in the academic setting as well.”
