I am delighted to work with students, colleagues and professional partners in the Centre for Children and Families and the University of Worcester more widely. My interests lie in the development of change-makers in children’s services through higher education. I try to support students and colleagues to integrate personal development with practice change.
I take this seriously, especially the fun bits.
Previously, I worked as an education welfare officer (EWO) for a number of English local authorities, a home tutor to school excluded children and a basic skills tutor for vulnerable children. I also volunteered my time to assist in homelessness and asylum-seeking assistance.
Even more previously than that, I tried to grow up in a variety of jobs: forklift driver, bicycle courier, archaeological excavation assistant, building site tea-maker, Mediterranean tour guide, academic copy-editor ... a wiggly-waggly kind of career path.

Stuart is one of the Institute of Education’s four nominated safeguarding officers (alongside Judy Miller, Sharon Smith and Deborah Langston), led by Catriona Robinson, associate head of the Institute. This team works to support all students and staff within the Institute of Education to apply the principles and policies of the State and the University of Worcester regarding the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, in particular when concerns arise during students’ work-based learning and placement-based learning blocks.
Stuart regularly attends the university’s safeguarding sub-committee.

Teaching & Research
Stuart teaches across a number of our courses and levels at Worcester as well as in flexible-and-distributed learning environments (FDL).
At Level 4, Stuart works with students through the FdA Early Years FDL route. He leads the module Protecting and Safeguarding: Working Together for the Child (FDEY1503). This engages Early Years students with the Munro Review of Child Protection and its implications for reflective practice, early help and multi-agency working.
At Level 5, Stuart continues his safeguarding work with students on the FdA Collaborative Working with Children, Young People and Families FDL route. The module Safeguarding Children’s Rights in Family Contexts (FDCF2502) supports students to find a way to advocate for children’s and young people’s voices amid the cacophony and clamour of family support assessments and service provision).
Stuart also supervises these students’ Long Studies (FDCF2504). These research studies encourage students to delve deeply into an area of family support practice that is of particular interest to them and to research it from the perspective of professional supervision. Each student produces a 7000-word analytic report.
At Level 6, Stuart works with students on both BA (Hons) programmes offered by the Centre for Children and Families.
On the degree Early Childhood (Professional Practice), Stuart leads the module Deconstructing and Reconstructing Childhood (ECPP3101). Here, we approach early childhood from a sociological perspective and adapt Ruth Levitas’s Utopia As Method in order to work out what how students can continue to make a positive and critical difference to the childhoods of flesh-and-blood children after their graduation through the ‘imaginary reconstruction of childhood’.
Stuart teaches students engaged in our top-up degree, Integrated Working with Children and Families, through its module Integrated Support for Children and Families: Policy, Practice and Leadership (IWCF3005). We use problem-based learning activities to draw out conclusions regarding the place of leadership in practicing integrated work across services working with children and families.
Stuart also supervises Level 6 students’ independent studies.
In addition, Stuart also supervises and assesses students’ practice-based learning portfolios on all undergraduate courses.
Stuart’s research focuses on safeguarding, child protection and professional learning in particular. His most recent thesis applied theories of learning and learning science to serious case reviews of child maltreatment to determine ways forward for professional practice.
Stuart is developing this research into a new Postgraduate Certificate in Culture Change in Safeguarding which should launch in September 2018 (subject to approval).
Ongoing research interests include civil disobedience and professional rebelliousness in the development of Early Years and children’s services. He is particularly keen to develop research on enterprise in human welfare organisations.
Stuart is currently designing a research project that focuses on the concept of corporate parenting, theories of learning and ‘Quaker’ approaches to higher education.
