A leading Professor is to deliver a lecture on future changes and challenges in delivering palliative care.

Professor Bee Wee, a visiting Professor at the University of Worcester, will deliver a lecture entitled ‘Palliative care over the next decade: changes, challenges and response’, on Thursday, April 21.

Her lecture forms part of the work of the University’s Centre for Palliative Care (CPC), a partnership with St Richard’s Hospice.

Professor Wee holds multiple distinguished roles, including National Clinical Director for End of Life Care, NHS England and Head of World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Palliative Care.

Professor Wee’s lecture will suggest that palliative care is not immune from the critical challenges facing health and social care. She will contend that the effectiveness of palliative care requires generic solutions to the wider challenges facing health and social care, not only in the UK but globally.

Originally from Malaysia, Professor Wee trained in medicine and general practice in Ireland before working in Hong Kong. She then became Deputy Director of the Medicine School in Southampton. This was before moving to Oxford in 2003 as a consultant and Senior Lecturer at Sir Michael Sobell House and Associate Director of Clinical Studies at Oxford University.

The University’s CPC was set up in 2013 in joint partnership with St Richard’s Hospice Foundation, and was developed to provide exceptional palliative care for all those approaching the end of life.

The CPC’s vision is to be a centre of international expertise of researchers, educationalists, academics and clinicians in palliative and end of life care working together with those providing and commissioning palliative care services. Professor Wee will help the CPC take a step forward towards their vision.

Professor Wee fulfils several other academic positions, including Honorary Professor of Palliative Medicine, Sichuan University, China and Visiting Professor of Palliative Medicine, Oxford Brookes University.

The Lecture takes place at 5:30pm at the University of Worcester, Riverside Building. For more information or to book a place call Mark Evans on 01905 855080.
