Fancy a night at the races this winter without having to stand out in the cold?
The University of Worcester is hosting a race night to raise funds towards the new Worcester Arena, currently under construction in the City.
It will take place at the University of Worcester’s St John’s campus between 7pm and 11pm on Friday, February 24. Tickets are £15, which includes a fish and chip supper.
The event is being sponsored by MSE Electrical Contractors with individual races sponsored by other local firms.
The Worcester Arena will open its doors to both University students and the general public in early 2013, and has recently attracted a number of significant grants from sporting bodies and charities. Construction started in the New Year on the former derelict site in Hylton Road.
The Arena will enable the University to offer unique services to local sports clubs in the community as well as elite and professional athletes around the Midlands. With spacious, high-tech facilities it can look to develop more innovative schemes, whilst also providing a venue that will attract a great range of spectator events to the City.
It will be a highly inclusive centre that will benefit the wider community in Herefordshire and Worcestershire and will provide a nationally outstanding venue for disability sport. Inclusive by design, the Arena will become ‘home from home’ for many athletes with a mobility impairment.
Sian Gould, Acting Alumni Relations and Development Officer at the University, said: “Last year’s race night was hugely successful, raising a significant amount of money to provide this fantastic new sporting arena for the City of Worcester. We wanted to run the event again, so people can continue to show their support for this major new facility which will have a huge impact on the region and sport as a whole.”
Races will be shown on a big screen and guests can place bets, just as they would if they were really there. Prizes and money will be up for grabs throughout the evening, plus a fish and chip supper is also included in the ticket price.
