Centre for Primary Education
The Centre
The Centre for Primary Initial Teacher Education (ITE) specialises in providing a range of high quality courses which equip students to become successful primary school teachers. We offer a variety of routes into primary teaching, from the three year undergraduate course to the one year Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and the one year Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).
All of these courses give the students Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). In addition, we run a one term Return to Primary Teaching course (each year from Autumn 2006 onwards), for teachers who have (QTS) but who may have been out of the profession for a time.
Quality Assured
The primary courses achieved high grades in the Ofsted inspections of 2005. The Inspectors commented, “The University is successful at attracting a high number of applications for its different courses…and the rigorous selection procedures are used to successfully identify those candidates most likely to succeed. Withdrawal rates from the courses are low”.
Partnerships
We work with a wide range of partner schools in the areas of Worcestershire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Dudley and Birmingham. The partner schools not only take students for their school experience, but school staff also help to deliver some taught programmes at the University and take part in planning and evaluating new and existing developments.
Many school staff take part in Continuing Professional Development at the University, working towards postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas, Masters Degrees and Doctorates. The Ofsted inspection in 2005 said, “Partnership schools are well prepared (by the University) to support trainees on the different programmes during their school placements. They are well supported by link tutors and four regional partnership co-ordinators”.
