Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL)

Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL)The new Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL), is an exciting DCSF fully funded programme which is being delivered by a Consortium of 8 West Midlands Universities called ‘Teach West Midlands’. All applications for MTL places are being processed by the University of Worcester which is handling all Teach West Midlands applications and if accepted you can study the programme either with the University of Worcester or with any of the other 7 Universities involved, as specified in the application guidance. 

The programme is innovative and mainly school classroom-based, designed specifically for practising teachers who must meet the eligibility criteria set by the government. 

The course aims to:
  • further improve teacher quality in order to raise standards
  • narrow the achievement gap, giving children better life chances
  • to further advance the status of the profession

The course will be:

  • Practice-based and modular
  • Designed to build progressively on ITT and induction to develop higher levels of professional skills
  • Focussed on developing practice through enquiry and the use of evidence
  • Personalised to meet participants’ learning needs
  • Validated by participating HEIs.

Eligible newly qualified teachers (NQTs) and new heads of department taking up a post from 2009/10 in schools that are receiving National Challenge and other equivalent support can join the MTL now.

The MTL is fully-funded by the government to give structured support at the start of your career by tailoring the programme to your learning needs. The emphasis is on classroom-based practice and learning focussing on children and young people with support from a school-based coach and university tutor.
The University of Worcester is coordinating all MTL applications. 

If you are located anywhere in the West Midlands area you should apply though the University of Worcester who will acknowledge your application and make the necessary arrangements. You will be able to indicate which University in the West Midlands you would prefer to work with in terms of HEI tutors.
