Supporting Students’ Careers

Supporting Students’ Careers

Careers and Employability are seen are more relevant by students when they are perceived as central to their course, rather than as an ‘add on’ to be considered only after graduation. Student feedback from those who have engaged with career activities show that one of the greatest influences to do so came from lecturers and personal tutors! You can help by:

  • Discussing about what the students are intending to do with all their learning!  What do they think they are learning from their programme that will be useful in the world outside university?  What have they learnt from working that may be useful for the programme? How might they best present their learning from this module in terms of graduate skills and attributes?
  • Using external presenters from the work place either to give information about a particular issue or career/work area or to offer work based problems and solutions.
  • Ask students to visit potential employers to find out the attitudes and competencies they are looking for in graduates.
  • Help students consider the skills and attributes developed through their time at university in a wider context. The Developing your Employability Skills leaflet shows how a wide variety of skills can be developed through work, extra curricula activities etc.
  • If you are looking for any materials to help you deliver sessions such as Interview Skills, Writing a CV etc, please contact the careers centre and we will share our resources with you.
