Models of PDP

Models of PDP

It is possible to implement and support PDP for students using a variety of models and frameworks.  UW is committed to a holistic approach which seeks to engage students in PDP through the curriculum, through the personal tutorial system and by the provision of support systems for students to undertake PDP activity independently of these (using PebblePad or the Student Qualities Profile).

Programme teams may decide to adopt a specific approach or a combination of approaches to implementing and supporting student PDP through the curriculum, as long as the programme team are clear what model or models they are using and their practice addresses the UW PDP Quality Standards.

This section provides two models that may be of value:

1. The UW Model for the Personal Development Planning Process

PDP @ UW is about students taking greater responsibility for organising their own learning through engaging in cycles of self-evaluation, target setting, action planning, practice and reflection.  It should also allow the student to develop a Personal Development Record or Record of Achievement through engagement in, and recording of, this process and the evidence it generates.  Any tool (such as PebblePad) or system (such as the Student Qualities Profile) developed to support PDP should support all these aspects.  However the support system and documentation may vary considerably from programme to programme as long as it meets the UW PDP Quality Standards.

2. The three spheres of PDP learning

The three spheres of PDP learning come from the cross sectoral definition.  These are often seen as competing approaches to PDP; PDP being about either, learning, employability or personalisation.  However they are complimentary and, by placing the student’s engagement in PDP at the centre, it is possible to relate all the areas.
