Visual artist to bring together the ancient landscapes of the Midlands.

Abberley and Malvern Hills GeoparkA visual artist will be bringing the ancient landscapes of the Midlands to life, after being appointing artist in residence for the Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark.

University of Worcester lecturer Sandra Masterson, will be drawing upon the rich rock, fossil and geological history of the Geopark, to form an exhibition at Worcester Art Gallery later next year.

The Geopark, which stretches from Bridgnorth in Shropshire, through Worcestershire and Gloucestershire was established in 2003. One of only 17 Geoparks worldwide, it is an area recognised for its outstanding geology.

Tropical lagoons and barren deserts are just some of the ancient landscapes to have covered this area, and Ms Masterson will be drawing upon the Geopark’s rich history in her work.

“I’ll be walking through the Geopark to really explore and map this landscape, and to gain a real feel for the different geological time zones that have shaped this area,” she said.

“In particular I will focus on the ancient fault line that runs through the centre of the park.”

As Artist in Residence, Sandra has already taken part in an Arts Festival in Crete with nine other artists from Geoparks throughout Europe.

Sandra’s UK work will link to the geological collection housed at Worcester Museum and Art Gallery for an exhibition next September.
