UNIVERSITY HOSTS CHILDREN'S STORYTELLING AND CREATIVITY FESTIVAL
Primary school children from throughout Herefordshire and Worcestershire attended an inspiring festival of storytelling and creativity at the University of Worcester in June.
The annual Children’s Storytelling and Creativity Festival is an exciting collaboration between the University, Worcester City Library, local schools and many national and local arts practitioners. The aim is to create a distinct and high profile annual festival for children in Worcester, with real educational, social, cultural and economic benefits. The event helps to build on the city’s cultural events calendar and introduce children to creativity in a university setting.
Over the course of two days in June, children participated in numerous workshop sessions, all aimed to develop and promote creativity within children. A magnificent yurt (a Mongolian tent) was erected within the campus grounds for the festival and will acted as the main storytelling area. In addition to the storytelling that took place on campus, the Festival also had a storyteller working with more schools in the Worcester City Library. Other creative workshops included drama, puppetry and print making.
Schools involved in the Children’s Storytelling and Creativity Festival included Dines Green Primary, Oldbury Park Primary, St Clements CE Primary, Cradley CE Primary, Hallow CE Primary, Leigh & Bransford Primary, Pencombe CE Primary and Whitbourne CE Primary.
Professor Judith Elkin, University Deputy Vice Chancellor, and herself an internationally known expert in Children’s Books, said: “Events such as this are a fantastic way for our staff and students to share the expertise and facilities of the University with the wider community and build on the University’s growing reputation in the field of children's literature, early childhood, education, drama, art and design and digital media. It is a personal pleasure for me that children’s books and storytelling are the focus of this event, and we hope that a festival like this will soon become a major part of the city’s cultural calendar.”
