University Officially Launches New Hockey ScholarshipWorcester Hockey Club has a range of competitive teams for men and women with both of its first teams playing in the Midlands Premier Division.  The women’s 1st team is seeking to re-gain a place in the England Hockey League (EHL) next season, while the Men’s team will re-double their efforts to win promotion into the EHL, having finished in 4th place in the Midlands Premier Division, last season.

Andy Waters, Chairman of Worcester HC, said; “The Club is delighted to forge this link with the University of Worcester at an exciting stage in its development.  Worcester Hockey Club can offer significant opportunities for students to develop their hockey careers, with excellent and specialist coaching available.  Students will also be able to gain coaching qualifications and take part in community sports development projects.  The link with the University has already got off to a very good start with a number of students playing in the 1st XIs and other teams last season.”

The scholarship will enable students to combine the challenges of studying and playing at a top level while gaining much needed financial support towards playing and travelling costs. Other benefits will include pastoral guidance towards planning for study, training and playing schedules and benefiting from the Sports Science and training facilities at the club and University.

Principal Sports Science Lecturer, Mick Donovan, said; “The University of Worcester has a proven track record with scholarships schemes, with existing links with Worcestershire County Cricket Club and Worcester Wolves Basketball Club. These scholarships offer potential elite players the opportunity to combine study and play and we’re delighted to officially launch our latest partnership.

“There are now an increasing number of talented athletes entering Higher Education and at Worcester we are committed to helping potential performers at all levels to follow their dreams whilst also gaining academic qualifications in the process.”
