For ancient history visit Warwick Castle, and immerse yourself in 1,000 years of the past with battles, archery, falconry and parades. Or visit Oxford the city of dreaming spires, with its many colleges famous across the world. The Black Country Museum offers you ‘living history’ with a chance to ride a tramcar or fairground swingboat.

Through the Ages

Worcester has a rich and fascinating history; explore the ancient Cathedral set high on the banks of the River Severn, find out why Worcester is ‘the Faithful City’ or wonder at the changing face of the industrial landscape from porcelain to sauce!

Worcester Cathedral was founded in AD 680. It has a Norman crypt, a fine peel of 15 bells including the tenor bell which weighs 48 cwt, a fascinating library containing a fine collection of medieval manuscripts and church music, a cloister with beautiful stained glass and the tombs of King John, who signed the Magna Carta in 1215, and Prince Arthur, older brother of Henry VIII. Today the Cathedral is not only a place of worship but a major tourist attraction. Host to the 3 Choirs Festival and also many concerts, such as those celebrating the music of one of Worcester’s most famous sons, Sir Edward Elgar.

During the Civil War Worcester earned it’s standing as ‘the Faithful City’ by sheltering the Royalists and remaining loyal to the King.  Many sites in Worcester still bear witness to the struggle between Royalist (King Charles I) and Parliamentarian (Oliver Cromwell) troops: St. Martin's Gate, Fort Royal, the Cathedral, The Commandery, The Greyfriars and the King Charles House.

Worcester’s industrial heritage bears witness to many household names, such as Worcester Porcelain and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce, renowned throughout the world. Worcester also boasts the oldest surviving newspaper, Berrow’s Worcester Journal, published regularly since 1709.

The new University of Worcester city development in Castle Street was once the old Worcester Royal Infirmary, where The British Medical Association (the BMA) was founded in 1832 by Sir Charles Hastings, a pioneering surgeon and one of Worcester’s most respected citizens.
