UnrealPowerpoint: a new "instructional" technology

Embedding PowerPoint slides into a computer Game Engine offers many learning and teaching affordances above the sequential PowerPoint presentation. A short demonstration will be given, and the associated theoretical grounding introduced (Concept Maps, Experiential Learning and Collaborative Learning). This will be followed by a discussion which hopefully will feed back into the development of this technology.

January 2008: date to be arranged

Lol Trueman:
Block diagrams - an aid to developing the skills of critical analysis and intellectual rigour

The concepts of critical analysis and intellectual rigour although encouraged and rewarded in the Applied Sciences could be more effectively taught. The use of block diagrams to remove prose from the documentation of ideas and the development of theories and processes encourages the student to develop skills in these areas. The two families of block diagrams, flow and web, have different properties; the former allowing logical planning of research, events and even module outlines whilst the latter allows the student to explore the complex and insecure nature of academic knowledge at its cutting edge. Further, by imposing secondary structures on such diagrams commercial skills such as time and resource management can be supported. Finally such diagrams make effective ‘quick guides’/’aide memoires’ and are increasingly being used in the areas such as health delivery and commercial planning and productivity.
